A quick newsletter from MinuteEarth

Hello and welcome back!
This is MinuteEarth’s guide to the best science content from our studio and beyond. Lately Behind The Scenes

As you probably know by now, Henry is giving away the actual drawings he uses to create MinutePhysics videos to his Patreon supporters. I’m a little biased, but I think it’s pretty much the coolest thing ever - and an awesome gift for the physics lover in your life (even if that physics lover is you). Here’s a little video he made about what he’s up to and why. And remember, this opportunity ends at the end of November - just a few days from now!

Minute Videos

Here are some videos our team has released on our various channels over the last few weeks!

Why Don’t All Rivers Make Canyons?
Some rivers - like the Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon - seem to be able carve huge canyons through the Earth, while others don’t. Cameron wanted to know why that was - and what he learned totally upended my understanding of how rivers and geology work.

People are wrong about spatchcocking
Right before Thanksgiving, every year without fail, the American people start searching up the word “spatchcock”.

In her latest video, Kate explains why spatchcocking might not be all it’s spatchcocked to be. Ok, at this point I’m just looking for excuses to say “spatchcock”. Still, the video’s pretty useful if you’re cooking a bird anytime soon

xkcd’s What If?

What if everyone pointed a laser at the moon?
In their latest video, Randall and the rest of the team explore the age-old question: what if everyone got together in Asia and simultaneously pointed an IMAX projector at the moon? Wait - hold on one second - I’m hearing that we NEED. MORE. POWER.

The Periodic Table in a 2D World
If the universe were 2D instead of 3D, we’d all have a lot of planing to do. Ooof. But even at the atomic level, things would have to get rearranged. In this video, Henry delves into what a 2D version of the periodic table would look like, and - along the way - explains why Carbon could become a noble gas, and why we’d need to invent a new element called Mattparkeron.

Creative Corner

  • We’re having a Black Friday sale at our DFTBA store! All of our merch - from pins to stickers to books - is 20% off!

  • An atmospheric river came through the Bay Area, flooding my basement. Wait, why is this in fun stuff? This wasn’t fun at all!

  • I got to hang out (and eat BBQ) with Matt Whitman and Shane from Stuff Made Here. Highly recommended.

  • Our new MinuteEarth Podcast is rocketing up the Spotify charts (ok for science podcasts but still). Check it out and subscribe!

Cool Science Stuff We Found This Week

  1. PBS’s Big Cats Unleashed answers a question I’ve been dying to learn more about since I first saw this behavior years ago. Why do some lions climb trees?

  2. A few years ago, we made a video about why some bears “waste” food. I think the US Forest Service found the pickiest bear in the world.

  3. Check out Cleo Abram’s fun video (with great illustrations) about digging a hole to the center of the Earth.
